If you're elected as a delegate, answers to most of your questions can be found by logging into your myMGEU account or by reading the Delegate Information Package, which will be mailed to delegates starting in mid-September. This package includes important dates/times, the Delegate Registration Information form and expense claim forms.
Listed below are some of the most frequently asked questions about Convention. If you have any other question that isn’t answered below, contact the MGEU Resource Centre at 1-866-982-MGEU(6438).
How do I become a Convention delegate?
You need to be nominated by a fellow member at your Local meeting in September. Members present at the meeting will vote to decide who is elected. The number of delegates elected by your Local is determined by the Local’s size. For example, a Local of 150 members or less is entitled to send one delegate to Convention.
The deadline for electing delegates and alternates is September 30th.
What should I expect as a first-time delegate?
As a first-time delegate, the MGEU encourages you to attend the New Delegates’ School on October 21st. This seminar will help you participate in debate by explaining some of the rules of order and other basic Convention procedures.
Does the MGEU cover my time away from work?
Yes. All you have to do is complete the Delegate Registration Information form contained in the information package that will be mailed to you, indicating the dates and times you are scheduled to work. A time off letter will then be mailed to you with a copy, which must be presented to your immediate supervisor.
Are accommodations available for out-of-town delegates?
Accommodations will be available for anyone living outside Winnipeg. A block of rooms have been reserved at The Fairmont Winnipeg. Check-in is after 3pm (check-out by 12 noon). The MGEU has arranged to pay basic room charges (with taxes) and parking for one vehicle. You can indicate your accommodation needs on the Delegate Registration Information form, also included in the mailing. All other hotel charges will be your responsibility and must be paid for when checking out.
What if I’m an out-of-town delegate, but won’t be staying at the hotel?
Members who do not wish to stay at the hotel can claim mileage and parking on the expense form provided in the delegate information package.
Are child care costs covered by the Union?
As per MGEU policy, delegates can be reimbursed for child/elder care expenses while attending union-related business. Claimants are required to fill out and submit the Childcare/Eldercare Expense Form, which is included in the delegate information mailing. Those who are able to find other means of care (i.e. family or friends) are encouraged to do so.
What do I do if I’m no longer able to attend?
Please contact the MGEU’s Resource Centre as soon as you know you will be unable to attend. With enough notice, the MGEU will be able to arrange an alternate to attend in your place. If you fail to notify the MGEU of your absence, you may be responsible for covering some expenses, such as accommodations, and your time-off request from work would not be honoured.
